For years, veterans suffered and died while awaiting treatment at Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities all across the country. Too many of our nation’s bravest men and women were allowed to fall through the cracks. Senator Marco Rubio took action.
In 2017, began building bipartisan support for legislation that would reform the VA by protecting whistleblowers and allowing the secretary to fire bad employees. The American Legion applauded the effort to give the VA “additional tools to increase accountability and address poor performance within the Department of Veterans Affairs.”
Later that year, Marco’s bipartisan Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act became law.
“Credit is due to Senator Marco Rubio for championing this bill,” said Concerned Veterans for America. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) “saluted” Marco and praised the bill for sending an “unmistakable signal to all employees that maintaining the status quo no longer works for those who have borne the battle.”
Marco understands our obligation to our veterans and servicemembers extends beyond quality care — we have an obligation to welcome them back into civilian society and provide the pathways to good, dignified work.
In 2020, Marco’s Supporting Veterans in STEM Careers Act became law. The new law assists veterans re-entering the workforce by directing the National Science Foundation to encourage veterans to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
Our work on behalf of our nation’s veterans and servicemembers is far from finished, and Marco will continue fighting for those who defend the freedoms that make America the greatest nation on Earth.
